Why competition matters more than you think
Competition can be one of the most powerful tools for self-discovery and deeper enjoyment of pickleball.
Avoiding tournaments may feel comfortable in the short term, but over time it often leads to something else: stagnation, frustration, or boredom. Not because you’ve stopped improving physically—but because you’ve stopped engaging with the most meaningful layer of the game.
This workshop exists to help you step into competition without dread, without panic, and without feeling like you’re “not built for it.”
What This Workshop Is Really About
This is not about becoming fearless.
It’s about becoming capable.
Most players who struggle in tournaments don’t lack skill—they lack a framework for handling competitive stress. The nervous system ramps up, the mind tightens, and suddenly the game feels unfamiliar.
In this in-person, off-court workshop, we focus on:
-
Why competition feels different from casual play
-
How pressure shows up in the body—and why that matters more than mindset
-
How to interrupt negative mental spirals mid-match
-
How to reset after mistakes or bad games
-
How to compete with clarity instead of constant self-evaluation
No jargon. No motivational hype. Just practical tools you can actually use.
A Note on “The Zone”
Many players have experienced brief moments where the game feels effortless—focus sharpens, self-judgment disappears, and everything seems to flow. This state often shows up not in comfort or when there’s nothing on the line, but when challenge and consequence are present.
Competition doesn’t guarantee these moments—but learning how to meet pressure without panic makes them far more accessible. Avoiding tournaments often means avoiding the conditions where this deeper, more immersive experience of the game can occur.
A Different Approach to the Mental Game
This workshop does not ask you to:
-
Pretend nerves don’t exist
-
“Pump yourself up” with forced confidence
-
Speak in front of the group or share personal stories
Instead, you’ll learn how to:
-
Work with nerves rather than fighting them
-
Stay grounded when matches tighten
-
Separate performance from self-worth
-
Let competition sharpen enjoyment instead of draining it
The goal is not to win every match.
The goal is to show up fully—and leave the court knowing you handled yourself well, regardless of outcome.
